Maithili

This blog is dedicated to my mother tong - Maithili.

Maithili in Sanskrit means "Of Mithila". I.e. people with Maithili as there mother tong are supposed to be originated from Mithilanchal, once known as Janakpuri. Mithila has been of historical importance way back since Satyug as it is the birth place of goddess Sita. A very obvious question pops up in mind is that "the language of gods is Sanskrit, how did it turn into Maithili?"

History is the guardian of the fact that humans have always been trying to simplify things as they progress, same happened with this language. People of Mithila used to converse in Sanskrit, and not only Brahmins but people from lower casts also conversed in Sanskrit (Such rich was our culture). Soon people started feeling that Sanskrit is tough to stick with and started trying out simpler methods to communicate. This unconscious effort towards simplicity resulted in origin of various languages like Bengali, Oriya, Maithili and many more (This phenomenon can be observed in all languages, for example Hindi is spoken different, in different regions of country. Spoken Hindi has been modified as per local dialect).

As Sanskrit was tough, so was its script, as new languages were formed so were new scripts and there grammar. Maithili was originally written in Mithilakshar and had a very sound grammar. The grammar of Maithili was so robust that it forced many scholars to study it, foreign scholars like Colebrooke (1801), Hoernle (1880), Grierson (1881), Kellog (1893) and others have studied Maithili's grammar, phonology, lexicography, historical surveys, and comparative linguistics.

Year 1352, was the year in which one of the great poets of India named Vidyapati (man of knowledge) made his existence on this holy land. Vidyapati is considered as the architect of Maithili language, he nurtured this language and for the first time Maithili had its own literature. During 1352 - 1448, Maithili language flourished at a rate never seen before and it can be said that these were the golden days of this language.

The language flourished to today's form with more than 45million people speaking this language across Bihar, Nepal, Bengal and other places of India, placing it at 40th position in the world raking. Earlier Maithili was considered as the dialect of both Hindi as well as Bengali, but in year 2003 it got a status of Independent language and in year 2004 it was given an official status.

Humans never stopped themselves from simplifying things, but we simplify things at what cost? Maithili speaking people continued simplifying the language and they have simplified it to such an extent that Maithili lost its script, Mithilakshar is now only found in old books and museums and has become a history. Common people have now started using Devanagri as an alternate script. Once this language attracted foreign scholars and now it has been simplified to an extent that the language has been de-recognised by the state government from the educational curriculum and the civil service examinations.

Why is it that it took ages to form this language and hardly 150 years to bring it to today's level? What are we waiting for? It's a high time to read the signs and make sincere efforts before this language disappears. One of the sweetest languages of its time has already become harsh, lets at least not loose it. It's a language spoken by 40 Million but known by none. We feel proud of the achievements made by ourselves, family and friends but when were we last proud of your community, language and culture? Try feeling proud by contributing towards community and conserving this heritage and pass it to our forthcoming generations to come.

I don't know yet about how to contribute towards conserving my mothertoung but I have observed few things which surely can help. I recently went to a wedding, the bride's family had arranged for a Mithili geet samaroh, and I was really surprised when one of the most popular Mithili singers sung a Hindi film song dubbed in Maithili. People with such capability of reaching mass must start writing and performing in Maithili. Another shock was when I went to my native place, I heard someone talking about a family who has prospered a lot and one of the person's said "The family has advanced so much, that they no more speak Maithili". I don't understand how does discarding ones mother tong makes someone successful in life?

I know that there are many people working towards conservation of the Maithili language and culture, and I wish they succeed in doing it.

Some of the figures have peen picked from following websites:

Babe Rating Scale

Just few month back we (friends at NESS Tech - Mumbai) celebrated the invention of Babe Rating Scale. After long discussions and lots of coffee we came to a conclusion which we think is a giant leap in the history of mankind because we defined the scale for rating babes.

This Scale is based on the observations of general people, i.e if you think, what we thought is wrong, then go and hide yourself because US military is searching for Aliens.

We observed that the difference between babes scoring 9/10 and 10/10 is not as significant as the difference between girls scoring 5/10 and 6/10. Infact we observed that, if few attributes of the babes scoring 9/10 is some how changed, they will score 10/10. Hence the babe rating scale cannot be a linear scale instead its has to be a logarithmic scale, where the difference between scales diminish as they progress from 1 through 10.

We got an opportunity to work with a hot lady, and the code word to reference her was "Babe Aunty", but soon we realized that its a very obvious nickname and anyone can figure out about whom we are speaking (She was the only Babe Aunty in the office worth discussing about) so we renamed her "BA" - (Babe Aunty). She was so irresistibly hot that we unanimously agreed upon making "BA" as the SI unit for rating babes. I.e. if a girl scores 7/10, then she would be 7 BA units hot or simply 7BA.

This scale is scalable too, what we mean by scalability is that this scale can have some offset. For example if you land up in a place where there are no girls who can be rated more than 7/10 on standard scale then you can give a offset of +3 to the scale and consider the girl with 7/10 rating to be now scoring 10/10 (This is a special feature for surviving in harsh conditions where there may be no babes at all. By scaling this scale one can live with pseudo satisfaction of being surrounded by babes) . I found this feature very useful because when i came to US, even the most simple looking girls will score 10/10 in India, hence i had to offset this scale by -6, i.e a babe scoring 7/10 in India will actually score 1/10 in US.

Behave weird, always!!

Try visualizing a friend of yours who gets irritated and pissed off when you tease him/her by uttering some keywords whose significance is known only by him and his friends (including you). If you did visualize what I asked, then have you wondered how powerful you are?

Yes, you are powerful because you can control the behavior of your friend (at least for a fraction of second) just by uttering few words whose significance is lost when spoken by someone else outside his friend circle. When the first thought of teasing your friend comes in your mind and eventually you utter it out, why do you think your friend will react to it? You think this because may be you know the context and/or you know how the person has been reacting to this word in past. Dude you have read his mind as far as reaction to this particular word/phrase is concerned.

Just imagine, if you try observing a person and try to understand the way he/she thinks then probably you can predict the person's reaction, emotion, thoughts and other behavioral changes when subjected to a particular stimulus. You can tweak things in such a fashion that you can make a person do things the way you want because now you know how he/she going to react to it.

Is this not the theft of that person's identity? In your minds the person is stripped, you have read the persons mind thoroughly and now you have the potential to control him/her. But this can happen even with you, you never know who has been watching your moves, who has been monitoring you and if somebody becomes capable of predicting your behavior, you have lost the importance of your existence, you are no more a human, instead you have become a puppet (Mr./Ms. predictable). Let's try to find out a method to conserve your existence and avoid becoming a predictable person.

According to my observations everything that happens with you and around you follows a pattern, even the most random events have a pattern but these patterns repeat after infinite time which we cannot monitor and hence call them random. One can predict about you when they observe your behavior, the way you think and other visual activities, because unknowingly you do things in a pattern, and once this pattern is discovered you are gone for a toss.

So the next big question is how to stop people from reading your mind? It's very simple, just behave weird. Control your reactions and change it before showing it to the world. If people expect some kind of behavior from you, just do something else. This will keep everyone puzzled all the time and no one will be 100% sure about what may be your next move. Once you have safe guarded yourself, go ahead and try predicting about others, believe me you will be surprised with your progress.

Best day of my life (I know its stupid but just thought of being one)

If given a chance, how would I like my best day to be?

On the best day of my life, the sun will be shining bright, the sun ray will not be sunny, they will be golden. One can follow the sunrays hitting flowers and getting refracted in all directions making every thing to glow with a golden tint. Butterflies flying around the bushes and grass as if they were playing hide and seek. Rabbits running around in bright green lawn and rubbing there nose with there paws. Mild breeze will blow the reddish orange maple leaves and a blond on the other side of the road will be holding her skirt to stop the quivering due to naughty wind.

Kids playing around and catching butterflies, riding the swings and running around me as I pass along the playground. I could still here kids shout as I walk away from the playground. A beautiful girl with black innocent looking eyes, pink rosy lips walking towards me and kisses me on my forehead as she pass by. Sea is bit rough but surfers riding the waves in the sun, everywhere on the beach are people in good mood, some sunbathing, others playing Frisbee, some hunting for sea shells and rest loitering on the beach. On the other side of the road, people sitting on the bench, some talking to their loved ones, some reading newspaper and struggling to keep the pages upright against the breeze, A group of cool friends, capturing a corner are cracking jokes and cherishing their time together, some performing tricks with there skateboards and cycles. Some looking at the sun setting at the horizon in the sea and puffing the smoke off there cigars.

If everything is so good, where I am walking towards? I am walking towards my sweet home after finishing some minor work at some place. My house is a small bungalow with green lawns in front and a small path to the dividing it into two regions. The path is made up stones and grass growing out of the gap between two stones; and is enclosed by yellow Lily flower shrubs with honey bees humming around for nectar. Just look around, one can see beautiful flowers everywhere. Humming birds and lovebirds flying around and there melodious songs dissolve like honey in the ears. At the back of the house are trees of various kinds, look at the Banyan tree on the right corner, birds have made nests on them, as it is approaching evening, everyone is returning back home and shouting on top of there voices to mark there presence. Some kids form neighborhood have encroached in and playing hide and seek amongst the woods.

Mother has been waiting for me, sitting on a wooden chair in the veranda and look at the entrance gate. She has cooked all my favorite dishes today. She managed to finish her household work early and has been looking at the old family photographs for rest of the time. The moment she sees me approaching, she can't control her happiness and it appears as if she has been waiting for me to come home for many years. She holds my face and looks at it as if she won't see me again and wants to see my face as much she can.

Mother heads towards kitchen to get some snacks and hot tea. I enter the hall and see my father finding a tough time connecting DVD player to the TV. We have decided to spend the evening looking at old home made videos. Meanwhile we finish setting things, mom is ready with snacks and hot tea for every one of us. As we are watching the video, we talk to each other for long and are happy with everything that has been offered by the almighty. It's 8:00 in the evening and we are done with watching all the videos, suddenly my muse calls me and asks me to take her on a long drive. The whether is cold outside and has stared to drizzle, I grab my jacket and take my car to pick her from her house. Her hair is moist, and for some reason she is looking more beautiful than ever. I take her to a nearby mountain from where we get an magnificent view of our home town. Its full moon tonight and by the time we reach the top, it has stopped raining and the clouds have just vanished. Because of rains, a beautiful pond has come alive on the mountain top. We sit besides the pond on a rock and look at the magnificent reflection of the vast sky with moon shining brighter and stars glittering. I express my feelings to her and tell her how much I love her, she looks into my eyes and kisses me on my lips and says, Even she wanted to say the same. Suddenly it starts raining again and we realize that we have been out for a very long time and must rush home before parents start worrying about us. We run towards the car, and she shivers with cold, I remove my jacket and help her wearing that. I play all her favorite tracks while driving back and we talk to each other all the way back.

As soon as I drop her to her house, I get a call on my mobile. It's my best friend's call, all my old good friends are meeting at the local restaurant and I am supposed to join them and while doing that I need to pick this friend on my way to the restaurant. I blow horn as I reach his house, he is late as usual. He gets into the car and tries to explain the reason for being late, but none of us are interested in it, but we do it because we have been doing it since we were friends. With loud music roaring in the car I rush towards the restaurant. Everyone welcomes us with all the abusive words ever they could think of. When we friends are together, everyone has a new name. Soon alcohol starts flowing down the throat and cigarettes smoke fills the air with good olden days. We spend a lot of time together speaking about many things and had a really good time.

I reach home at 12:00 and after changing my cloths I just lay on my bed, and I don't know when I sleep happily.
